In January 2004, The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) will launch a major synthesis on the Earth System ("The Earth System: A Planet Under Pressure"). The result of a decade of research, the book from this synthesis effort highlights our current state of knowledge about the functioning of our planet and how it is changing through human and natural forces. The book presents convincing evidence that the planet is indeed under severe pressure and that we have reached a turning point in terms of the decisions we must make for the future. The Earth is in a no-analogue situation and business-as-usual is no longer an option.
